Sights
Early morning mist rising slowly wherever the river water met the atmosphere,
first revealing the golf course and then the surrounding mountains.
Swimmers on the river bank stretched out on colorful towels
ready for the daily afternoon swim.
Jumping off the diving rock upstream and wafting down the current
as far as you could go.
The sun setting behind that mountain in the west, turning the sky
to pink, purple and deep blue before darkness descended.
Watching how quickly the stars appeared until the whole sky was filled
with an array of twinkling stars.
Sounds
A car engine heard long before the vehicle appeared
returning from the trip to Roscoe.
Closer to home, hearing the constant rustling leaves
of the Shivering Aspens across the road when
you sat on the front porch.
Horses hooves clattering on the dirt road stones as they galloped up the last
stretch to home from their morning ride.
Golfers climbing up the embankment to the third hole green
with clubs clunking in their bags.
Then a swish and a click as they teed off for the fourth hole,
returning the same way, clubs bouncing and clunking along.
Shouts of, “My turn!” “Poison” “Send her, send her!” as the
croquet games were played out evening after evening.
Then later on, the shouts changed to “Home Free” as the children
played Hide and Seek among the monuments of granite
and marble in the church graveyard.
Recollections
Ice cream cones at Stewart’s garage; no 31 flavors here,
just plain vanilla, chocolate or strawberry at a nickel each.
Saturday nights at the square dances in Turnwood,
do-si-do, allemande right, allemande left with a grand march all around.
The overnight camping trip to Slide Mountain.
Playing mumblety-peg with Girl Scout knives on the front lawn.
Finding just the right stone to use to play Hop Scotch on the sidewalk.
Playing Jacks on the large granite slab by the mailbox
at the end of the front sidewalk.
Always, in the background, the soothing gentle sound of the river,
washing over the rocks as it flowed across the valley and beyond.
